In May, 2016, I rose in the House of Commons to second Bill C-233, an Act respecting a national strategy for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, at second reading. It was a great honour to Co-sponsor this bill as it legislated the creation of a National Alzheimer’s and other Dementias Strategy that Canada has needed for years. It is even better to see our Liberal government putting significant funds behind it – $50 million over 10 years. This will fund awareness, research, and care and support for patients, families and caregivers all living with the challenges of dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are a serious problem affecting Canadians. As our population ages, it is crucial for our government to provide greater support. I am proud of the work groups in Don Valley West such as Cedarhurst Dementia Care Home and the Dotsa Bitove Wellness Academy are doing to advance the innovative relational care model for seniors in our community. I look forward to this model being shared with Dementia care centres across Canada through our government’s investments in Dementia care.
